Practice Profile
The Cannon Hill Lane Medical Practice
The Cannon Hill Lane Medical Practice is based in a predominantly residential area at the Cannon Hill Lane Surgery in West Wimbledon, close to the border with Morden. It is fairly equidistant from St George’s Hospital and St Helier Hospital and has close ties with both. Very close to the Practice is the Nelson Hospital, which houses the local Primary Care Trust (the Sutton & Merton PCT) as well as various Outpatient Services provided by the local Hospitals. Parking does not usually pose a problem with a Practice Car Park for the Doctors and plenty of free parking locally as well. There is also a local bus service. The Surgery itself is in a converted mini-terrace with a purpose built extension and a pleasant garden. The ground floor is used by the Practices based at the Surgery, whereas the first floor houses other members of the Primary Health Care Team, most notably the District Nursing team and the Health Visiting team. The premises have been recently thoroughly refurbished and modernised and provide a pleasant working environment. The People:The Cannon Hill Lane Medical Practice comprises six doctors: Dr Sarah Woropay, Dr Graham Mason, Dr Marek Jarzembowski (aka Dr Marek), Dr Sonya Ibrahim Dr Ruth Goldsmith and Dr Dr Shakeel Mughal our two salaried doctors. The Practice has been involved in medical education for many years, both on the undergraduate and postgraduate level and all of the doctors play an active role.
Most of the doctors have participated in a variety of local projects within the Primary Care Trust and beyond and as a result, the Practice has an exciting and energetic feel about it. The Cannon Hill Lane Medical Practice has a strong tradition of innovation. Before the demise of Fundholding, the Practice was an active member of the local Total Purchasing Project and helped create what is now the Intermediate Care Team. The members of the TPP felt so strongly about their ability to work together that when the local PCG (now the Sutton & Merton PCT) came into existence the Practice went into partnership with the other TPP practices, creating the South West London Primary Care Organisation. The SWLPCO has the distinction of being the largest medical partnership in the UK and needed an Act of Parliament in order to come into being. The Doctors are supported by a first-rate team of clinical and non-clinical staff. We have two Practice Nurses who have a vital and dynamic role in the Practice. They do a lot of the routine Chronic Disease Management work, have a significant commitment to Health Promotion, and also deal with a great deal of independent acute work as well. They are constantly looking for ways to improve the way their services are offered to the patients. The non-clinical staff provide the reception, clerical and secretarial skills the Practice needs to survive. Because the Practice is very busy, they have had to learn to cope with demanding patients, demanding doctors as well as demanding Practice Managers. Yet, this is done with a vast amount of good humour, good will and common sense. Presiding over this collection of very disparate people is the Practice Manager, Mrs Alison Kirk who exudes an air of calm unflappability. The Patients:The Cannon Hill Lane Medical Practice is a medium sized practice with a relatively stable population. We have a larger than average number of elderly patients as well as a relatively large number of young children. The local population tends to be moderately affluent with upper working and lower middle classes strongly represented. We have a growing population of ethnic minorities. The largest single group is of Irish origin, however we also have strong representations from other European nations, including Poles, Russians, Italians, Spanish and Portuguese, as well as people from the Balkans and from Scandinavia. From further afield we also provide care for people of Asian and African origin, primarily from India and Pakistan, but also from Sri Lanka, Iran, Iraq and the Middle East in general, as well as Central and South Africa. Being London of course, we also play host to a huge number of more temporary guests from all over the world, therefore additional language skills are often a boon. We do not have a large number of patients with addictions, but we do have a sizeable group of patients with significant Mental Health problems who provide us with interesting challenges. Our Aims:The Cannon Hill Lane Medical Practice is a Teaching Practice. We strongly believe that General Practice and the Primary Health Care Team are the linchpins of the National Health Service and that for the NHS to survive in the 21st Century we have to provide a good grounding in General Practice for our Registrars. We understand that there is no substitute for experience, but we also feel that the process of gaining this experience can and should be enjoyable and memorable. With this in mind, we try to ensure that our GP Registrar Colleagues feel valued and respected and in every way a full member of the Team.
